Academic Symposium "Matters of Urban Expertise", ETH Future Cities Lab

Madlen Kobi presents a paper entitled "Towards Circular Cities? Reuse Expertise in Human-Material Relations" at the Academic Symposium "Matters of Urban Expertise – Who develops the city of the future?" organized by Julio Paulos, Jenny Lindblad, and Jonathan Metzger at ETH Future Cities Lab, Zürich. The paper outlines how expertise on circular economy in construction is linked to the everyday encounter with materials. While construction business mainly talks about the circulating materials, this paper analyses the input of labour, skills, and knowledge at different stages of the reuse cycle to enable the circulation of materials. The ideal of a “circular city” described in urban planning documents is daily imagined, embodied, and negotiated by professionals at different stages where reused parquet slats are handled, from the planning office to the disassembly site.
