Visual Ethnography Training Days, Kingston School of Art

Madlen contributed to the three-day Visual Ethnography Training Days at Kingston School of Arts with a presentation on "Architectural Ethnography and the Translation of Ethnography into a Visual Language". The talk provided an overview on the field of architectural ethnography. As on-site research method, ethnography can be applied to inquire into the forms, technologies and materials for house construction and the socio-cultural context of architecture. Madlen highlighted examples for building surveys, site mappings, urban walking, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews to show how we can engage with the diverse actors involved in building and inhabiting architectural spaces. Further, the talk addressed how fieldwork-based ethnography can be translated into a unique visual language that accompanies the dissemination of research.
